Hand and Foot Care for Men

A mani-pedi primer

by

SAVE
If your hands are as soft as sandpaper and you have calluses sharp enough to tear open the mail, do you really wonder why your best come-hither look sometimes falls flat? And does one glance at those feet of yours have the object of your affection running in the other direction?
Skin care can be manly
Yes, men should be men. But they should also have welcoming hands and well-cared-for feet. Have no fear, gents. You can be well-groomed and manly at the same time. Here’s a primer.
No one likes it rough
To soften hands’ hard edges, use a body scrub in the shower to gently exfoliate dry skin. Regularly moisturizing your nails and cuticles with lotions containing natural lactic, glycolic, or malic acid can help keep hands supple.
Finger tips
Soak fingertips in warm, soapy water to soften cuticles, then use an orange stick (a wooden manicure tool) to gently push cuticles back. Dry hands thoroughly. Yes, you do need to file your nails after you trim them, otherwise your loving caress could leave a scratch mark. File in one direction, to the shape of the finger. For fancy occasions, use a buffer to shine the tops of the nails on your fingers.
Hangnails
Dehydrated cuticles cause tiny pieces of skin to break near the side of your nail and, because they’re attached to living skin, they can be painful. For prevention, keep cuticles properly moisturized by massaging them nightly with jojoba or vitamin E oil.
Avoid biting or picking hangnails, as this can lead to tearing and infection. Instead, use nail scissors to snip off dead skin, being careful not to cut too close.
Paronychia
If your job keeps your hands frequently immersed in water or in contact with chemicals, you’re at risk of a fungal, bacterial, or yeast infection called paronychia. Aggressive nail biters are also susceptible. This infection occurs when organisms enter a gap between the nail and the surrounding skin.
A warm-water soak with tea tree oil may help if no abscess has formed. Otherwise, see your doctor. Left untreated, you could lose the nail. If your work requires wearing of rubber gloves, slip on a pair of cotton gloves first for ultimate protection. (No one needs to know.)
Foot fetish
Feet take a lot of abuse, especially in the winter when we barely take them out of boots and socks to air out!
With more than 250,000 sweat glands in each foot, feet are thought to be a valuable route for eliminating toxins. But when the exit point is barred by a layer of dead, calloused skin (not to mention shoes and socks!), it might explain why feet can get a little pungent. A good pedicure can fix a multitude of foot problems.
Corns and calluses
Excessive pressure or friction causes skin to thicken or harden over a bony prominence on a foot. When they develop on the bottom of the foot, they’re known as calluses. When they are smaller; appear on the sides, tops, and tips of the toes; and have a hard centre, they are called corns.
Common causes include footwear that’s too tight or too loose, tight socks, or a deformity of the foot. First up, make sure the shoe fits. Never try to cut away the hardened corn, as this can lead to infection. Regular exfoliation can help remove corns and calluses over time.
Plantar warts
Unlike other warts, plantar warts grow inward through the sole, or “plantar” of the foot. Home remedies include repeated applications of salicylic acid or thuja oil.
Athlete’s foot
This fungal infection, also known as tinea pedis, is common and contagious—so always wear shoes at the gym. To treat athlete’s foot, keep feet clean and dry. Wash in warm, soapy water and be sure to pat your feet dry (especially between the toes). Use the towel only once before laundering, and wash it in hot water.
Apply tea tree oil directly on affected areas, or add a few drops to a footbath. Consider supplemental probiotics to support your immune system.
Sweet feet
To prevent malodorous feet, be sure to bathe your feet daily in lukewarm water and mild soap, and dry them thoroughly. Change your socks every day. Give shoes 24 hours to air out after wearing. Wear socks made with natural materials such as cotton instead of nylon, and wear leather or canvas shoes that allow your feet to “breathe.”
For a sweetening soak, boil two bags of black tea for 15 minutes, then add 4 cups (1 L) of cool water. Soak your feet for half an hour. The tannic acid in the tea helps to kill bacteria.
Ingrown toenails
Most common in males between the ages of 15 and 40, painful ingrown nails often result from cutting toenails too short, from wearing shoes that cramp the toes, or from a poor, leaning-forward posture (which causes a corner of the nail to curve downward toward the skin).
To avoid getting ingrown toenails, trim your nails straight across, but with a slight curve at the tip for maximum strength. Leave toenails longer than the nail fold and wear shoes with ample toe room. Ingrown toenails can lead to infection if not properly treated, but don’t try to dig out the problem nail yourself as you could encourage infection! Seek medical care.
Tips
  • To protect your nails, don’t use them as tools for scraping, picking, or turning screws!
  • Those with diabetes should check with a health care practitioner for specific advice on caring for their feet.
The manly pedicure
After a hard day at work or working out your stress at the gym, soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes. Add a few drops of tea tree oil if you have concerns about athlete’s foot. (This is a great preventive measure if you participate in barefoot sports such as martial arts!)
Use a nailbrush to clean under and around your nails and the bottoms of your feet. Gently exfoliate with a pumice stone or foot scrub. (Regular exfoliation may help remove painful corns and calluses.)
Thoroughly dry your feet, then carefully push back your cuticles with an orange stick. Don’t cut your cuticles, as this can lead to infection. Using straight-edge clippers, trim your toenails to a length near the end of your toes to prevent the nail from growing painfully into the skin around it. Do not trim toenails in bed. Consider massaging some avocado, coconut, or olive oil into your feet, and pull on a pair of cotton socks.

Myths and Facts on Waxing

What You Need To Know About Getting Waxed: 12 Waxing Myths And Truths

Posted: Updated:
Print Article
What you need to know before you get your next waxing session.
Hair removal may be an industry unto itself today, but its base is in caveman times -- removing hair gave the enemy one less thing to hold onto in battle, and also gave pests fewer places to hide on the body.
The Ancient Egyptians --who viewed a smooth and hairless body as the standard of youth and beauty -- developed a technique called sugaring. They made a sticky paste of beeswax that was applied to the skin, then pressed with a cloth and yanked off, removing the hair beneath. Today, this self-torturous method of hair removal is common practice for women and is becoming more popular for men.
Indeed, according to a recent study, men are having their hair removed at an increasingly growing rate, specifically from their bathing suit area. Whether you're getting a boyzilian or just want to trim your eyebrow hair, there are several things you need to know about getting groomed. Which is why we talked to Fuzz Wax Bar, Toronto's first wax bar dedicated entirely to waxing services for women and men. They provided us with a list of wax myths and truths that you should consider before you head out in your quest to become hairless.

Myth: Never Wax The Top Of Your Brows
"Since no two brows are alike waxing a few strays above the brow line can help create a more symmetrical and tidy look. A good wax professional can help you decide what's best for your face."
Myth: You Don't Need To Exfoliate As Waxing Does It For You
According to Fuzz Wax Bar, waxing does not replace exfoliating. "Waxing does exfoliate the first layer of skin, however prepping the skin by washing and exfoliating well is the best way to prevent bumps and ingrown hairs -- before and after your wax."
Myth: Exfoliating Should Only Be Done In The Shower
"Try dry exfoliating! It's a great way to rejuvenate and renew your skin. Use a soft-bristled brush or specially designed mitt to remove dead skin cells, improve blood flow, detox your body and clarify your complexion."
Myth: You Have To Wait For The Hair To Grow Out Really Long Before Waxing
"The hair growth only needs to be ¼ inch for body hair and 1/8 inch for eyebrows." Fuzz Wax Bar notes that "most people will achieve ¼ inch hair growth in as little as two weeks. We recommend waxing every month for your best results."
Myth: Using A Tanning Bed After A Wax Is Okay
"Post-wax, your skin will be more sensitive to sources of heat. Skip the tanning beds for a day or two to avoid burning. And while you're at it the same goes for saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and hot exercise rooms."
Myth: The More You Wax, The Fewer Ingrown Hairs You'll Have
"Ingrown hairs grow below the skin's surface and unless cared for properly can come back after each wax. Exfoliate the skin and use an ingrown hair treatment cream to rid yourself of this pesky problem," advises Fuzz Wax Bar.
Myth: Dry Skin Means Dry Hair
The crew at Fuzz Wax Bar also want us to know what we can do to treat our skin pre-wax. They say that, "If you don't nourish your skin, your body hair will be equally starved for moisture. Dry hair is also more likely to break when waxed, which means it may grow back much quicker, so moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!"
Truth: Waxing Makes Hairs Grow In Fewer And Finer With Each Visit
"Regular waxing will make your hair finer and will also cause it to grow back slower, which means less pain with each visit. Make it your monthly ritual and reap the rewards of a regular wax routine."
Truth: After Waxing Your Pores Are Exposed
"Waxing will cause the pores to open thus leaving the skin slightly vulnerable. The area should be kept clean and nourished with special post-wax lotions to keep the skin smooth and supple."
Truth: Your Skin May Turn Red After Waxing
"Waxing leaves your skin a wee bit sensitive and your skin is likely to appear red. Some individuals may even experience minor swelling. It will go away in a few hours and is completely normal."
Truth: Numbing Creams Can Help Reduce Pain After Waxing
"Applying a numbing cream or taking an aspirin about 30 minutes before your wax appointment can help minimize pain. Remember, if done properly and using the quick waxing method, the ouch-factor should be minimal."
Truth: Waxing Will Keep Your Hair Skin-Free For Weeks At A Time
"When you wax, the hair is removed from the root and should give you hair-free skin for about three weeks on average. New hairs will begin to appear at this point and within a week of regrowth you'll be ready for your next wax."

Spray Tanning For Men

Whenever you get back from a vacation, the first thing others usually comment on is your great tan, or lack thereof. Tanning has been popular since the early 20th century, but the health risks associated with the sun's UV rays have made maintaining an even tan — much less any kind of tan — difficult, especially for those who live in cold climates.
Enter indoor tanning salons, which became a popular trend in the '80s. Now, indoor tanning is a $2 billion-a-year industry in the United States alone.

everyone's doing it...

Since about 2000, sunless spray tanning has taken the tanning world by storm. It has provided men with a way to get and maintain a healthy-looking, even tan without being exposed to the sun's rays or those of a tanning bed. What is most impressive is that, unlike previous sunless tanning methods, the effects of spray tanning actually look good.
The following article will answer the most popular questions that men have about this relatively new tanning technique.

What is spray tanning?

Spray tanning works by applying a special mist to the body. This mist is sprayed onto the body in a booth, which you can now find at most higher-end tanning salons and spas. The mist emitted contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is a chemical that reacts with dead skin cells by cosmetically dyeing them brown. So after spray tanning, the skin takes on a golden brown color that usually looks like a natural tan.
Depending on the booth used, the mist will either be water or oil based; men with sensitive skin should opt for a water base. Also, some salons offer different types of mists, allowing you to choose the level of darkening. If you are very fair-skinned, keep in mind that going too dark will look fake and awkward, no matter the quality of the product.

Will it give me a good tan?

The mist in spray tanning temporarily makes your skin golden brown, not orange. The chemical reaction physically changes your skin color, so there's no need to worry about smear lines; besides, the products on the market have been well-tested in order to make sure they provide a color that looks exactly like a natural tan (or as close as it's going to get). Even fair-skinned guys who usually turn pink rather than brown while tanning will benefit from a bronze color by getting a spray tan.

How long does it last?

Mystic Tan, one of the most popular brands of spray tanning booths, states that once an optimal color is achieved, it can be maintained by tanning every five days. Fantasy Tan, a competitor, states that their tans will last up to 10 days. As you'll discover by reading on, there are certain measures you can take (before and after your spray tanning session) to ensure that your tan lasts as long as possible.
Here's a mini-lesson in dermatology: The top layer of your skin naturally sheds in order to give way to newer skin. Because that top layer of skin is the part that's dyed by the DHA, the tan wears off once the top layer of dead skin peels off. So, to extend the effects of the spray tan, you must use moisturizer (you know, that lotion your woman swears by) to keep the top layer from shedding as quickly. Basically, if you moisturize, you should be able to maintain an optimal tan for about five days.
There are many moisturizers on the market, by every cosmetic producer in the world. You can't walk into a pharmacy or department store without finding a full rack of the stuff — if you're still not sure where to look, ask any member of the fairer sex and they will point you in the right direction.

How to make your tan last as long as possible, avoid streaking, and more…

What can I do to maximize the tan?

In addition to moisturizing with a water-based moisturizer, you should exfoliate before spray tanning. Exfoliating basically eliminates the already-dead skin cells, which means that the spray tan mist will dye the layer of skin that is likely to last for a longer period of time.
After getting the spray tan, try not to sweat or shower for a minimum of four hours, to allow the DHA to take full effect. So that means no physical activity after spray tanning. Now this might all seem like a lot of work, but if you're going to the trouble of getting a fake tan, you may as well do it right.

Will it rub off or smear? Can it stain my clothes?

I'm not talking about a lotion that's applied like some kind of makeup. Spray tanning emits a colorless mist that chemically changes the color of your skin. If the film from the mist does get on your clothes, it can be easily washed off. But you still might not want to wear your favorite white shirt to the session, because sweating can cause the DHA to get on your clothes.

Does it leave an odor?

Some sunless tanning products are water-based and scentless. But most mists will leave a smell that is best described as starchy, so I do not recommend going out right after spray tanning. The smell can even linger after showering, but should disappear by the following day.

Who is doing it?

The different types of men who tan are as numerous as the reasons for tanning. They include men who want their muscles to show more, men who look pasty, men who have an upcoming special event, like a wedding, and men who just want to get some color without going on vacation.

Is it safe? Why or why not?

Spray tanning uses FDA approved dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which has been approved since the 1970s and has no known toxicity. The FDA does recommend protecting your eyes, lips and nasal passage while in spray tanning booths. Inhaling or tasting the mist are both bad ideas.
The American Association of Dermatologists considers spray tanning to be the most effective sunless tanning tool, and possibly the best part about spray tanning is that you don't have to expose yourself to damaging UV rays.

Who shouldn't use it?

Because of the way DHA reacts with skin particles, certain people might receive an uneven or unattractive tan when using it. This includes men who have sun-damaged skin, mottled or freckled skin, and scars.
It should be noted that men with excessively dry and flaky skin should avoid spray tanning because it could result in an uneven and patchy tan.

Where can I get it?

Again, sunless tanning booths are relatively new and are available mainly at higher end tanning salons and spas. As they increase in popularity, the number of salons that offer them should rise.

How much does it cost?

In general, salons charge approximately $25 (US) per session. Package prices that offer anywhere between three and 10 sessions are available to bring down the overall cost. This is recommended if you plan on doing it more than once.

get bronze

Now that you know of another way to get that tan you're looking for without spending thousands on a Caribbean vacation or frying yourself in a tanning bed, you can make your buddies jealous and the women swoon at your great, healthy-looking tan.

Q-What bronzing agents are in the Tan on the Run airbrush tanning solutions?

A-3 different types of bronzers are used- first, the cosmetic bronzer. Designed to give instant gratification of having a tan and acts as colour guide for technician. 2nd-DHA bronzer initally has no visible effect as it is clear. It begins to react with your skin in 2-4 hours, fully develops in approx 8 hours and eventually replaces the cosmetic bronzer that washes away after the clients first shower. 3rd- Eyrthulose is used as a slow-reacting bronzer, similar to DHA. It enhances the clients colour and extends life of tan to 7-10 days.

Q-What is DHA?

A-DHA is an active tanning ingredient derived from sugar cane and beets, which reacts with the amino acids in the skin to create the darkening reaction or tan.

Q-Will a sunless tan protect my client from UV rays?

A-No, their skin will not be protected and can still burn without sunscreen.

Q-Should clients rest between spray sessions?

A- We recommend that after every 5 weeks of spray tanning, the client allow their skin to rest for 10 days. This will eliminate patchiness or uneven areas of wear. These areas are caused by normal contact with clothing and other surfaces which cause additional exfoliation.

Q-Will sunless tanning solution cause additional freckling to already freckled skin?

A- No, however it won't cover up freckles either. What is darker will stay darker, and what is lighter will stay lighter. Use cosmetic concealer to cover large areas that client doesn't wish to have emphasized by spray tan

Q-How long will the tan last?

A-7-10 days with proper care

Q-I have sensitive skin- will I have a reaction?

A-The product is hypo-allergenic. The company has had no reported allergic reaction

Q-Will I turn orange?

A-No-the product we use is a golden brown hue. We have tested many products to find the perfect formula

Q-How long does it take to dry and develop?

A-10 minutes to dry, 6-8 hours to develop

Q-Will it stain my clothes?

A-No, product is water soluble

Q-Will it cover stretch marks, scars and imperfections?

A-No, it will camouflage

At Bode Spa Ottawa we have been teaching guys on how to properly shave for their specific skin and hair type. After all when were you ever taught how to shave ? As boys we reach that age where we need (or want) to start shaving that amazing peach fuzz. our fathers or older brothers toss us in the bathroom with a few hints on what to do with a razor and shave cream they picked up (more than likely on sale) wait for us to come out with cuts and some bleeding pat us on the back and welcome us into manhood. THAT IS IT! no one took the time to properly show us how to shave for our unique hair growth patterns, skin type and hair type. Come see us at Bode Spa Ottawa for a consult on how to shave ! For those of you with very corse hair or curly hair here is a great article to help you out (as we know corse hair and curly hair suffer a lot with ingrowns and razor burn)

Why do I get ingrown hairs and razor bumps? How can I prevent razor bumps and ingrown hairs?

Ingrown hairs and razor bumps are a result of using products and methods that were not designed for our unique needs.  Properly shaving with high quality products and tools designed for coarse and curly hair prevents and reduces razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
  1. You know those multiblade cartridge razors that promise to lift the hairs and cut them below the skin’s surface?  Hairs cut beneath the skin usually grow back in a slightly different direction and, consequently, burrow into your skin.  Coarse or curly hair needs to be cut cleanly and at the skin level to avoid this.
  2. Multiblade cartridge razors also tug at the hairs causing inflammation. The blades are placed so closely together that coarse hairs can easily become trapped between them. Once trapped, they are yanked out leading to irritation and swelling.
  3. This also happens when skin is pulled to get that extra close shave.  It’s not worth it.  When you let go of your skin, it pops right back over the hairs you've just cut.  Now they start growing into your skin causing razor bumps.
  4. Not shaving enough. If you are prone to razor bumps, we strongly suggest you allow no more than one day between shaves. Unless your skin is just too sensitive, shaving daily is optimal.
  5. Too much Pressure! If you've used one of those plastic disposable razors, no matter how fancy the commercial made it seem, or how many blades it has, you know it's crazy lightweight and you're forced to apply pressure to cut anything. Aside from scraping the heck out of your skin, you are cutting the hairs beneath it. When you move the razor away, the skin pops back into place, but the hair beneath it is now poised to start growing into your skin. Aside from the incredible design, the first think you'll notice when you hold the Bevel Razor is its weight. Absolutely no pressure is required. It's precisely weighted with solid brass to cut your hair, at skin level, while leaving your sensitive skin safe.
  6. Electric Trimmers can cause razor bumps and irritation too. A couple issues here. If your hair is coarse and/or curly, the sharp jagged end left by your electric trimmer can easily start to curl and burrow into your skin causing razor bumps. And considering the hairs aren't being softened before the shave, things can go south quickly. Moreover, if not properly cleaned, you or your barber can wreak havoc on your skin by infecting the bumps with bacteria. Not a good look.
  7. Never shave against the grain. It provides a slightly quicker close shave, but usually brings on razor bumps. Shaving against the grain allows hairs to be cut beneath the skin. Once that happens, they continue growing into the skin....creating razor bumps. Shave with the grain.
  8. Another issue:  not properly preparing the skin and hair to be shaved!  We strongly suggest you start off with a hot shower to soften your skin and hair and open the pores.  And don’t skip out on your Bevel Priming Oil.  It further softens your skin and hair and acts as a layer of protection on your skin.  Furthermore, the Bevel Shave Cream is specially formulated to condition thick and curly hair and lubricate the skin so the razor can glide across, tug-free.
  9. Rinsing the shaving cream off is not the final step. Lock in moisture and keep the hairs soft with Bevel Restoring Balm. The witch hazel and tea tree oil in it soothe and prevent inflammation. While gentle amounts of lactic and salicylic acid exfoliate. And of course, it's enriched with jojoba oil and shea butter to keep your skin moisturized and protected all day.
  10. Lastly, reusing blades makes the problem worse.  They become dull and dirty. Coarse/thick beards require blade changing much more often. We really need a sharp blade.  Bevel Bundles include enough blades to ensure a sharp blade each shave.

Dirty feet are a breeding ground for all sorts of bacteria. Benefit of getting a pedicure is one way to get rid of all the dirt stuck under toenails. During the process, your feet will also be exfoliated to remove dead skin that has the potential to cause problems. By adding essentialoils to the foot soak, you can also get additional anti-bacterial protection.

2) Help Releases Stress

If your profession requires you to be on your feet, most of the day, then a pedicure can be exactly what you need. All men would agree that stress is the biggest enemy and given your frenetic schedules, it’s not a bad idea to take an hour out of your daily routine for a pedicure. After all, sitting and relaxing while a professional is working on your feet can be bliss. This will also help in distracting and taking your mind off issues that you had deal with all day, another reason to go for pedicure.

3) Removes Foot Odour

No one likes a stinky foot! Pedicures are the best way to remove dead skin, dirt and bacteria from the feet completely. This makes more sense in the rainy season when feet need extra care and protection. Your feet also need exfoliation to remove the bacterial infection, which you can’t get rid off in normal washes and can only be achieved vis-a-vis pedicure.

4) Prevents Ingrown Toenails

Men, often, don’t pay much attention when you cut your toenails. This can lead to cutting nails too short or leaving miniscule pieces at the edges - both of which lead to ingrown toenails. A professional pedicure will ensure that your nails are taken care of and are also cut to the correct length. When a calf or foot massage is assisted with a pedicure, it also benefits in improving blood flow in the region while reducing the pain, if any!

5) Makes You Look Good

Let’s face it, women are attracted to men who take pride in how they look. No need to go over-the-top, but trimmed, clean and buffed nails is way to go and a great attribute to any guy. If you’ve ever got a pedicure done, you’ll understand what we actually mean, and a good way to change this condition is to actually go and get it done.
You shave, shower and cut your hair. So, why not take out the time for your feet as well?
